Vitamin c
IV Infusion

Vitamin C (Ascorbic acid)- intravenous infusion

INDICATIONS:

  • IMMUNE BOOSTER

  • SKIN BRIGHTENING

  • ANTI-AGEING

  • ANTIOXIDANT

  • ANTIVIRAL

  • DETOXIFICATION

  • REDUCES FATIGUE

  • ANTI-CANCEROUS

 Benefits:

• Vitamin C is required for the biosynthesis of collagen, L-carnitine, certain neurotransmitters and protein metabolism.

• It helps maintain healthy skin, blood vessels, bone and cartilage.

• Vitamin C is also an important physiological antioxidant below 20 grams and it is a pro-oxidant above 20 grams (used for anti-cancer therapy)

• Regenerates other antioxidants within the body, including alpha-tocopherol (vitamin E)

• Antiviral effect can be achieved with intravenous concentrations (not possible with oral concentrations. Oral Vitamin C reaches a peak plasma limit due to GI absorption saturation and increased renal clearance)

• At a high concentration Vitamin C destroyed 72% of the histamine present in the medium! It can help with allergies!

 • Collagen neogenesis via fibroblast activation

 • It helps with better wound healing and postoperative recovery

Cardiovascular effects

• Reduce monocyte adherence to endothelium and improve endothelium-dependent nitric oxide production and vasodilatation.

• Reduce vascular smooth-muscle-cell apoptosis which prevents plaque instability in atherosclerosis.

Vitamin C deficiency can cause:

• Fatigue, malaise and inflammation of gums

• Impaired collagen synthesis results in connective tissue weakness causing petechiae, ecchymosis, purpura, arthralgia, poor wound healing, hyperkeratosis and corkscrew hairs.

• Depression

• Iron deficiency anaemia due to increased bleeding and decreased non-heme iron absorption

Groups at risk of Vit C inadequacy

- smokers  (76% of smokers will have an inadequate intake of Vit C)

- passive smokers

- malabsorption

- cancer

Intravenous Nutrition Therapy is preferred over oral tablets or intramuscular injections because:

-it bypasses gastrointestinal (GI) absorption and biotransformation in the liver ensuring bio-availability of the micronutrients in high concentrations (not bound to plasma proteins) and gives desired results quickly

- total concentration of intravenous infusion/injection is available to the tissues

- higher IV nutrient concentrations can be given than is possible by mouth without the intestinal side effects, i.e. diarrhoea following high oral doses of magnesium or vitamin C.

*Suitable for males and females between 18-60 years

* Patients undergoing chemotherapy/radiation must consult with their oncologist before taking vit C

 (written letter required)

!!! VERY IMPORTANT!!!

Blood tests are required before commencing Intravenous Nutrition Therapy.

The following blood test results are required:

  • FULL BLOOD COUNT

  • LIVER FUNCTION

  • KIDNEY FUNCTION

  • G6PD (Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase)

These blood tests can be done privately at my clinic ( Price £200)

or you can do them elsewhere.

*Blood is collected on Saturday morning only. If you wish to make booking for this please send me a message via social media or email aestheticnursesclinic@gmail.com

Contraindications:

  • allergy to vitamin C or any of the other ingredients

  • if you suffer from oxalate urolithiasis (a type of kidney or bladder stone) or hyperoxaluria (a condition, where you have too much oxalate in your urine)

  • if you suffer from an iron storage disorder/iron overload (e. g. thalassemia, hemochromatosis, sideroblastic anaemia, erythrocyte concentrate transfusions)

  • if you have a severe renal insufficiency (impaired kidney function or kidney failure)

  • if you have a glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency/defect (inherited disorder of red blood cell metabolism)

  • Medications: Deferiprone, Desferrioxamine (taken with Vit C can cause disturbance of the heart function)

  • Pregnancy and breast-feeding

  • Very high or very low blood pressure

  • Poorly controlled diabetes

  • Patients on antipsychotic drugs: phenylalanine

  • Chronic liver disease & hepatic encephalopathy

The following medicinal drugs reduce the concentration of vitamin C in your body and thus might reduce the effectiveness of Ascorbic Acid:

- Acetylsalicylic acid (anti-inflammatory drug) such as aspirin (Large doses of vitamin C may lower the effectiveness of oral anticoagulants)

- Nicotine from cigarettes

- Alcohol

- Appetite suppressants (e.g. fenfluramine)

- Iron (taken as a food supplement)

- Medicines used to treat epilepsy (e.g. phenytoin)

- Oral contraceptives which contain oestrogen (e.g. “the pill”)

- antibiotics (e.g. tetracycline)

- Fluphenazine (for mental disorders): Blood concentrations might decrease due to Vitamin C

Therapy

-Aluminium antacids in combination with vitamin C may lead to higher blood aluminium levels

- Is vitamin C infused before or after the chemo-/radiotherapy, a temporal distance

of 24 hours is recommended

Health risks from excessive Vit C

- Kidney stones in individuals with renal disease and pre-existing hyperoxaluria

- For people with hereditary hemochromatosis (which is a contraindication to this treatment) high dose of Vit C can  result in even more iron overdose and result in tissue damage

- Too much of high doses given too often can cause iron overload

- May induce muscle cramps->Vit C requires calcium supplementation!

- Insulin-dependent diabetics have to be careful of high doses of Vit C (more details on a consultation)

GLUTathione
IV Infusion

GLUTATHIONE- The ‘Master’ Antioxidant

What is glutathione?

• A tripeptide composed of the 3 amino acids glutamic acid (excitatory), cysteine (excitatory), and glycine (inhibitory).

• Is found in all cells in the body, in the bile, in the epithelial lining fluid of the lungs and at much smaller concentrations in the blood.

• All 3 amino acids in the tripeptide are glucogenic (sugar-burning).

Functions of Glutathione:

• Performs Phase I & II detoxification in the liver of heavy metals, organophosphate pesticides, chlorinated hydrocarbon solvents, estradiol, prostaglandins, leukotrienes, acetaminophen, and other
foreign chemicals.

• Primary detoxifier of heavy metals

• First line of protection against environmental chemicals and toxins.

• Master antioxidant in each cell. Defence against oxidative stress

• Regulates the cell cycle, DNA and protein synthesis, proteolysis, and gene expression.

• Participates in bile production.

• Transports amino acids especially cysteine into kidney cells.

• Protects thyroid cells from self-generated hydrogen peroxide.

• Chelator of lead, mercury, cadmium and arsenic (present in cigarette smoke - beware passive smokers).

• Can prevent or reverse alcohol-induced fatty liver, cirrhosis, hepatitis, and liver tumours.

• Cardiovascular system enhancer

• It transforms haemoglobin into its reduced state, enabling it to accept oxygen and carry it to the cell

• Major protector of the immune cells and the immune system

• Only antioxidant that can recycle itself

• Skin lightening (anti-melanogenic effect)

INDICATIONS/BENEFITS:

- Increased energy

- Slows down the ageing process

- Reduces muscle& joint discomfort

- Strengthens immune system

- Detoxifies the liver and cells

- Improves mental focus and clarity

- Improves quality of sleep

- Reduces the effects of stress

- Improves the skin

- Athletic performance and recovery

- Skin lightening (melasma, hyperpigmentation)

Depletion can cause:

• Chronic fatigue syndrome.

• GSH deficiency is of great significance in the pathogenesis of Diabetes Mellitus.

• Glutathione depletion may contribute to the production of phototoxicity by UVB, UVA and by PUVA

Contraindications:

- asthma (caution)

- epilepsy (glutamate is an excitatory amino acid)

- bipolar disorders (glycine)

- may decrease the effectiveness of Clozapine

- pregnancy and breastfeeding
